What is a potential problem that can be solved with design technology?

E.g.: problem: Too many earrings
Solution (i have to come up with): earring rack in shape of ear

Alternative energy sources are a popular topic for engineering research and design projects, and you could even make a simple demonstration for a high school project. Here’s one you could write an interesting report on, and it wouldn’t take too many materials:
Problem: Energy generation by solar cells is less efficient when the sun is not directly overhead.
Method: Get a solar panel at Radio Shack or on eBay. Wait until late afternoon, then connect it to a voltmeter and place it on a stable surface. Note the voltage when the panel is facing straight up, then prop one end of it on successively higher stacks of coins until it is facing directly at the sun. Stop regularly to measure the angle and note the new voltage.
Solution: Present your findings as evidence that solar energy production becomes more efficient as the panel is tilted further towards the sun.
(Note that panel-tilting mechanisms are already in use, but deriving the need for them on your own should impress the teacher).
