Is an oil painting on board is worth checking out?
I recently acquired an oil painting from my grandmother’s estate a few months ago. It’s an oil painting done on board (I have never heard of such a thing). Can some one shed some light on this subject for me? It is signed but of course I can’t read it. Thanks
Long before canvas was the most common material used as supports for oil and tempera painting, wooden panels were prepared and used to paint on. The practice has been around for hundreds of years. Most of the earliest oil paintings (using materials somewhat familiar to artists today) were done on thin wooden panels, much like what would be prepared for the inset panels in a cabinet door. Properly made, with a stable wood, a wooden panel will last for centuries. Rembrandt, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rubens, Brueghel, Durer, the list of artists whose works are in museums from the 15th to the 20th century is vast and a virtual who’s who of masters. Your painting is not likely to be a major find–but you never know and it’s value has nothing to do with what it was painted on, but rather who painted it and what it’s condition is. A museum curator could probably give you some idea as to who painted it and what value it may have, or at least point you in the right direction.
