If a student gave you something handmade would you be happy?
Would you be happy if a student gave you a handmade gift — something that is original or something that is not handmade but with quality? Would you be happy if I gave you something handmade? I’m just curious because I don’t know what teachers like.
If it were something small so that it couldn’t be seen as a bribe, I would be honored. What we really like is knowing that someone appreciates what we do, so the exact nature of the gift is secondary to the fact of the gift. Over the years, I’ve gotten everything from candy to artwork. I’m looking at a beautiful miniature Pakistani painting I got from a Pakistani student right now. Probably the oddest thing I ever got was a case of fresh eel! The student’s parents had an eel-processing company in their home country, and they were visiting her and brought the eel as a thank-you to her professors. In those days I had a roommate, who was completely freaked out by the fact of a big case of eel in the refrigerator. I actually like it, but I had to get rid of it quickly because she couldn’t handle it.
