College or University Strong in both Music and Liberal Arts?
Hello. My name is Susie and it is my dream to attend a school with a strong program in both vocal preformance(specifically opera) and one of the follwing; occupational therapy, school psychology, or psychology.
Schools I have found that offer programs in both of these include, Boston University, Lawrence University, University of Michigan, Univeristy of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Univrsity of New Hampshire, Ithaca College, and New York University. Opinions on these programs? Suggestions for others?
Well, from what I know – Lawrence is the only college of those listed that boasts a specific 5-year double degree program between its college and conservatory, and one of the only of its kind in the country (with the others being Bard and Oberlin). Both lawrence’s liberal arts and conservatory are solid, reputable programs. Just to let you know, both the colleges and conservatories at Bard and Oberlin are a notch higher in reputation, but really, for music it highly depends on who you want as your private teacher.
I don’t know very much about therapy/psychology programs, but I can tell you that when it comes to just music, U Michigan has the strongest. Ithaca, Lawrence, NYU, Boston, and U Wisconsin, among your list, also have gained recognition as schools with strong music curriculums.
You also have to think about which campus is a better fit. If you want smaller, then I’d go with Lawrence or Ithaca. If you want a huge school, probably U Michigan would be the best for both voice and therapy. But you should check them out in more detail, and visit them if you can.
