Okay, first of all. L’Étranger is an exsistential novel. That means the book deals with a sense of disorientation and confusion in the face of an apparently meaningless or absurd world and with the futility of existence.
Meursault kills a man on the beach and to him it’s not a big deal just an event which occured. He is moved only by sensory experiences and in this case, staring at the sun resulted in the Arabs death.
He is later arrested and tried.
At the trial, the prosecution calls Meursault a remorseless killer, and he is convicted, and waits to be executed. In the prison cell he accepts his fate because it’s the only real option he has; neither suicide nor faith in God are options for Meursault once he fully realizes the absurdity of the world in which he lives.
Truth is another motif in the book. Meursault, despite being judged by many of his contemporaries as amoral, is consistently honest and direct. He never displays emotions that he does not feel. (He didn’t cry at his mothers funeral)
Camus suggests that we are responsible for our actions and their consequences and no matter the outcome everything is essentialy meaningless.
