painting materials

I want to start painting…what materials and surface?
I would really like to start painting and selling my art. I’m wondering what type of paint is the best and on what kind of surface. A friend a mine sells his art but sometimes his paint chips off and his customers get kinda mad about it. I’m really interested in watercolor and perhaps just regular painting. My question is…what do I start with and what is the best material?
well it depends on what kind of paint you want to use and or how much money your willing to put into supplies. Oil is pretty expensive because you have to use paint thinners and all that jazz. Acrylic is nice (thats what i use) Alls you need is some paint i would use paint thats from 5-10$ a tube and then some brushes. Oil and acrylic can be used on canvas board or plain canvas. canvas board is canvas over a hard sufrface like cardboard or wood and then primed to be painted on. a plain canvas is a wooden frame most of the time with stretched canvas over it and primed. These cost about the same. The canvas board is easier to frame but if you paint the sides of the stretched canvas you can easily make artwork that does not need a frame. Do not mix oil and acrylic if you must use acrylic first and then apply oil over it. Never put acrylic over oil. If you choose water color make sure you get water color paper from your local crafts store. The more you layer colors the more you can warp the paper if its not watercolor paper. Its thicker and allows wear. The paper however is pretty expensive just to warn you but the paint and the brushes are not. Try out different brushes out to what you like best. usually you make textures with old brushes or anything from a sponge to a fork. its hard to explain all these paints i would suggest going to your local college or high school and talking to an art teacher. im sure she can better describe and answer all your questions and concerns.
